Glad to see someone else who loves AC/DC! I was very lucky to see them when they headlined at Download Festival, greatest concert ever…
Accelerator physics relates to building and running particle accelerators. A particle accelerator fires a particular group of particles (generally hydrogen) at very high speeds to study their properties. The Large Hadron Collider at CERN is definitely the most well known but its quite a niche area!
If you’d like more information there is a nice page on CERN’s website with a nice animation which explains it more https://home.cern/science/accelerators
I’m going to join in this one as well, we use particle accelerators to head our fusion plasmas up to super high temperatures. They’re much smaller than CERN, and they are called Neutral Beam Injectors. they are one of the most powerful heating methods we have, and they are going to be crucial for future fusion power plants. We also work with CERN on some superconducting magnet technologies, so there is some overlap between what we do!
